Before making any important decision, you should think about self-reflection. The situation of choosing a profession requires it too. At this stage, you will think about what kind of work environment you want to have and who you want to communicate with.
While you’re thinking, you can take notes. These tips may be useful, because you will evaluate the description of jobs later.
Here are a few questions to start with. Try not to dwell on the questions writing down the first thoughts that come to your mind. If you are not sure of some of the answers, then your reliable friends or family can give you some advice.
What are your main values? Examples of responses: financial stability, helping people and independence.
What skills do you have for different jobs? Examples of responses: data analysis, planning, researching, foreign languages, photography.
What type of personality do you have? Examples of responses: calm, sociable, confident, aggressive.
2. Define the main conditions for work
Jobs are very different. Spend some time to determine the required conditions for work. This can be anything from the amount of salary or travelling to benefits and place of residence. Maybe you should go back to the question-and-answer if you feel uncomfortable when it comes to choosing between many jobs:
Do you want to get a fixed salary?
Do you need some benefits such as special health insurance or a certain number of days off?
Would you be able to take a job connected with travelling?
Do you need to work in a certain place?
It is important to know in advance what you want from future work. For example, if you need to get a permanent salary, you can avoid working as a freelancer. When you’ve decided it, you can move on to the next stage – to identify a job that might be suitable for you.
3. Make a list of available vacancies.
After you have learned more about yourself and your needs, start looking for a job that you find interesting or desirable. If there is some work that you don’t know much about, write it down and find out about it later. You can face an interesting profession. Keep in mind that descriptions of jobs don’t always perfectly reflect the actual state of things.
